Brother Bill’s Helping Hand is a West Dallas non-profit organization.

Brother Bill’s Helping Hand is a non-profit organization founded by West Dallas preacher Bill Harrod who saw a need the community had for basic necessities.

He started Brother Bill’s Helping Hand as a Christian ministry to provide food, clothing and spiritual encouragement to those neighbors in need.

West Dallas has a higher poverty rate than the rest of the City of Dallas. More than a third of families with children live below the poverty level.

To help the community overcome the challenges of generational poverty, Brother Bill’s Helping Hand has created a robust program of services including:

  • A 4,000 square foot grocery store that serves more than 300 families with healthy food each week

  • A full-service Community Clinic that provides high quality healthcare at little to no cost for our uninsured neighbors

  • A Mental Health Clinic that provides 1:1 counseling support for adults and children

  • PathWays, a six-week / 90-hour program that teaches women the skills necessary to find and keep a job

  • Educational and Wellness Programs for individuals, families and kids – from English classes, to parenting skills, Bible study groups, exercise classes and more

Brother Bill’s Helping Hand has a full-time staff of 11 dedicated team members and relies heavily on its volunteer staff to deliver its programs. In 2018 people gave their time and energy as volunteers over 3,400 times. Given the wide variety of services and programs we offer, there is a way for everyone to volunteer and make a positive impact.

Our Core Values

“Love your neighbor as yourself” (Galatians 5:14).

We serve our neighbors with dignity, respect and care.

We exist to support and empower our neighbors to lift themselves up.

Faith is the foundation of our work.

The Lives We Touch

I attend the Women’s morning exercise classes three times a week. We have Zumba Tuesdays and Thursdays and on Friday we do yoga. Since I started attending the classes, I’ve lost 20 lbs. Before beginning the classes I suffered from debilitating arthritic pain in my knees. Now my arthritis has improved and I’m able to lead a much healthier life. I also love getting to know my neighbors in such a fun way

I was very depressed. My soul was broken, and Brother Bill’s staff encouraged me to start counseling. Counseling has uplifted my life. There are actually people that care for me and they don’t even know me. The Brother Bill’s clinic was a God send, because of them I’m here, life is now worth living.

When I first entered counseling, I started to talk about my feelings, the hatred, anger and disgrace I felt. The counselor helped me, walking with me step by step and encouraged me not to give up. I started going to church and bible study. It took me about a year to get where I am, but they helped me so much. I am a new person now and I feel better about myself.
