When Need Comes Knocking, Brother Bill’s Answers–Snow or Shine

When Winter Storm Uri blew through Dallas, many residents endured limited or no power, heat, WiFi, or water in their homes. Driving conditions were dangerous and schools were closed. Families were left scrambling to keep themselves warm and fed, even finding refuge with friends or a local warming center. Our neighbors in West Dallas and Oak Cliff were no exception.

Brother Bill’s staff and volunteers remained on call to meet the urgent needs of our neighbors, despite our facility losing power for the week. Nonprofits, city programs, and community leaders collaborated to maximize our impact. Our efforts last week included:

  • Offered support for two warming centers, Nash-Davis Recreation Center and Jaycee Zaragoza Recreation Center, to care for West Dallas neighbors without power or heat.

  • Supplied food and water to residents of the Lakewest Senior Apartments in West Dallas with volunteer help from two of our newest board members.

  • Delivered food to the city of Dallas’ emergency homeless shelter at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

  • Collected and distributed dozens of blankets to neighbors.

  • Select staff members assisted with home repairs and burst water pipes.

Even with neighbors back on their feet in warmer weather, we will serve 680 families this week at the Grocery Store and look forward to assessing their well-being and offering encouragement!
